Structural Integration
In this issue we will begin to explore how our myofascial tissue (muscles and
fascia together as a unit) affects the body's structural alignment. Most of us
have a good understanding of posture, often introduced when we are young.
"Sit up straight!... Stand up!... Stop slouching!"
These are phrases many of us heard at one time or another when we were
children. Although children sometimes have poor posture, especially when they
do not want to do something, their bodies are usually very sound structurally.
Observing a child standing form the side, you would see that there is a
straight line from their ear to their heal. Think about the weight being
distributed by this type of structure.
There is enough tension in the soft tissue to hold the bones in position,
allowing the bones to carry the bulk of their weight. They do not have to fight
the pull of gravity to stand.
Their soft tissue works just as much as it is suppose to, allowing them to
conserve energy. This structural model is very efficient, much like a properly
constructed tent. There is enough tension in the ropes to allow the poles to
hold the tent up.
Think, for a moment, what would happen to this tent if you slowly pulled on one
of the ropes. This pull would put an additional strain on the rope on the other
side. This strained rope would start taking more and more weight until it
eventually pulled out of the ground.
This analogy can be applied to the structure that many adults have. Through
overuse (repetitive motions), under use, and accumulated injuries, there exist
myofascial strains in the body that, much like the tent rope, pull our bodies
into different positions.
Once this efficient structure is lost, the burden of bearing our weight becomes
more and more the job of our muscles. No longer are they holding the bones into
the proper position to hold the weight, but, instead, they are taking the
weight. Not only do we waste energy by overusing the muscles, but also pain
patterns emerge from this overuse.
The body is overworked simply by holding its weight up against gravity. The
efficiency of our childlike structure is lost. What then can we do to return to
our earlier child-like structure?
One thing is prevention. Make sure your workstations are ergonomically correct.
Strive for a healthy weight. Drink plenty of water (more on this in a later
issue). For both prevention and improving your condition, get involved in an
exercise routine that encourages a strong structure such as tai chi, yoga or
pilates.
Another powerful tool is a bodywork technique called structural
integration. Originally designed by Dr. Ida Rolf, structural
integration is a ten-session form of massage that specifically addresses the
soft tissue pulling the body out of alignment.
Completion of this treatment can add years of increased mobility and freedom of
motion, and can return the body and mind to a healthier state.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a
system of healing that dates back thousands of years. At the core of TCM is the
notion that a type of life force or energy known as qi flows through channels
in the body called meridians.
Each meridian is connected to one specific organ, or a group of organs, that
govern particular bodily functions. When there's too little or too much qi in a
meridian or when the qi stagnates or is blocked, illness results.
Acupuncture treatment consists of inserting thin stainless steel needles at
various points on the body, known as gateways, to unblock or rebalance the flow
of qi.
The world Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the
treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:
-
Digestive disorders: gastritis and hyperacidity, spastic colon, constipation,
diarrhea.
-
Respiratory disorders: sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent
chest infections.
-
Neurological and muscular disorders: headaches, facial tics, neck pain, rib
neuritis, frozen shoulder, low back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis.
-
Urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems.
Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to
tension, stress and emotional conditions.
Complimentary to acupuncture, I also offer
Chinese herbal medicine. With these herbs, I can treat a wide variety
of conditions.

Microdermabrasion - What is it all about?
There are many factors that influence the way our skin appears and functions.
Environment, lifestyle, heredity and the natural aging process play key roles.
As we age, circulation of blood flow to the skin decreases, which results in a
dramatic drop in cellular renewal.
The skin loses its strength and elasticity and fine lines begin to appear.
Physicians addressing this concern highly recommend exfoliation to remove the
dead skin cells and encourage new cell growth. Granular scrubs have shown some
success, but there was a need for additional results.
So, out of the need for a more effective form of exfoliation, microdermabrasion
was developed. A stream of fine Diamond Crystals are vacuumed across the skin,
removing dead and damaged cells and promoting new collagen growth.
As a non-invasive technique, there is no down time and healthy, vital skin is
created. This procedure not only works on fine lines, but also improves the
appearance of age spots, acne scars and acne, enlarged pores, and dry, flaky
skin.
You'll see and feel a difference after just one treatment.

Permanent Makeup
Are you tired of applying your makeup? Wouldn't you love to wake up in
the morning and be able to walk out the door already feeling beautiful? If so,
you should consider permanent makeup.
Permanent makeup is a subtle enhancement to your own natural features, unlike
conventional makeup which can become outdated as trends change. Also, makeup
products can be applied over the permanent makeup as desired.
Today, more and more women are opting for the convenience of a 'natural look,'
with eyeliner and brows that never smudge and lip color that won't wear off!
Now you, too, can have that same convenience with permanent makeup.
I have chosen to use the hand method of permanent makeup because it is
completely disposable. This method gives me total control of where the pigment
is placed.
Those who can benefit from permanent makeup are:
-
Active people with little time to apply makeup
-
People allergic to conventional makeup
-
Athletic people or those with oily skin that shed makeup easily
-
Those who cannot see well enough to apply their makeup without wearing glasses
(IMPOSSIBLE, right?)
